To properly start to fix slow WooCommerce website, you’ll have to scale the images correctly. You first stop would be to run a Speed Audit on your Website with GTmetrix.
The main improvement you will get is from Scaling Images. It’s easy, just run the GTmetrix, select the PageSpeed tab and expand the ‘Serve Scaled Images’ node to discover ALL the images that are not properly sized; therefore slowing down your website.
Select all those links and put them in an Excel Sheet so you can address all those images one by one. The first image you see on top is the least efficient:
https://soundorabilia.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Gibson-SG-Standard-Bass-Heritage-Cherry-at-Gear-4-Music-Image-300×300.jpeg is resized in HTML or CSS from 300×300 to 113×113. Serving a scaled image could save 9.1KiB (85% reduction).
Scale the Image in your Media Library
Using the Search Box in Media Library of your WordPress, you will be able to find the image and make sure the THUMBNAIL ONLY is scaled at the right size, which is 113×113 for this specific example as per GTmetrix above recommandation.
Just do this for every single Image Links provided by GTmetrix, then you’ll get an A as well as 2 seconds off your Loaded time 😉
If you to get those image displayed at an even faster pace, you can install the Imagify plugin that comes with WP Rocket to turn all of them into WEBP format!
Why WebP instead of JPEG?
WebP vs. JPEG is a no-brainer: WebP offers 25 – 35% smaller file sizes at the exact same SSIM quality index, which means that WebP images have smaller file sizes with the same quality.
There isn’t much more to say on this. WebP offers a better all-around package than JPEG as an image format. The only downside to WebP in this battle is that not all browsers can load WebP so some will load that JPEG file instead.
